Every performance begins with an Invocation a STUTI, in praise of GOD, a prayer for blessings,
Followed by Nritta, pure Dance which is pieces of dance, isolated compositions within a set framework of Tala complete in itself, called Tukras, Chakkardar Parans Tihais.

Nrittya includes - Tarana, Chaturang, Thumri, Malhar, Tirwat, Bhajan, Holi. Musical compositions that are expressed through dance, the subjects ranging from seasons, festivals to stories & legends of Indian mythology ( Ganesha, Krishna / Radha, Lord Rama / Sita, Shiv /Parvati, Meera Bai, Buddha, Bhrama / Vishnu etc.)

Gat Bhava is a unique item of Kathak. In a basic rhythm, with no spoken word, a complete story is enacted through mime & action.

Dasha-Avatar is a popular item, depicting the theory of evolution; the poetic verses of Sanskrit are beautifully composed to music.

Nayak-Nayaka Bhed, the Hero/heroine demarcation is exquisitely detailed in the Natya Shastra based on their personality & characteristics. These are musical compositions covering a range of emotional states in the hero & heroine. Laya Parikrama or Tatkar is usually the conclusion of a performance. It is a beautiful, well blended pattern of intricate rhythm executed only through foot movement. Fractionalization of different Taals (metric cycles) are combined to create complex rhythm pleasing to the ear & then executed with amazing speed & dexterity.
